Description:

Swakopmund: Our Heritage, this fine collection of ink, water-colour and pastel drawings by Christine Marais reflects a comprehensive visual impression of the old German colonial buildings of Swakopmund. From the vantage-point of an artist, with more than a suggestion of cubism and convincing dimension and depth, she accurately depicts a complete spectrum of early Swakopmund architecture, from the well-known to the more obscure. The buildings which are illustrated were built mainly between 1900 and 1910. The variety of facades, portals, turrets, towers and ornamentation represents the architectural tendencies which dominated Europe at the turn of the century, of which the so-called Jugendstil was possibly the strongest influence. In addition to each of the 36 colour impressions there are historical and background notes as well as pen drawings of details of the interior or exterior, or something in or connected with the relevant building.
