How many livestock can be kept on a particular piece of land without destroying the essential soil and vegetation? In a country like Namibia, the answer to this question varies from season to season and year to year. Namibian farmers have to be particularly careful not to overstock their land, as most of our country is arid with sparse vegetation cover and consequently has a low carrying capacity.

The term "carrying capacity" refers to how many livestock can be supported by vegetation in a defined area. The lower the vegetation cover or the less palatable the grazing the lower the carrying capacity. There are problems with the term "carrying capacity" in a country like Namibia if researchers calculate it once and try to apply it over long periods.
