Description:
Offbeat South Africa is both a guide and tribute to the strange and surreal people, places and things that make this country great.
It is an off-the-radar directory of idiosyncratic attractions for all those who have dreamt of jumping in their car and following the road less travelled.
Readers will marvel at the world’s largest pineapple and a four-legged ostrich, meet a rapping granny, explore a bizarre hobbit-like house and the quirkiest town in South Africa, go for a pint inside the world’s first tree pub, and frolic with frogs at a festival.
Magnificent, amusing, or just plain kitsch, all are celebrations of the distinctive South African psyche.
About the Author:
British-born Richard George holds a Masters in Tourism and Social Responsibility from Exeter University. He currently lectures in the School of Management at the University of Cape Town, where he obtained a PhD in Marketing. He is the author of various books, among them Marketing South African Tourism and Hospitality.
Australian Kim Wildman enjoys the wandering life-style of a guidebook author for Lonely Planet Publications, where she has contributed to eight guidebooks, including South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland and West Africa.
After moving to Cape Town in 2003, she started writing regular southern African travel updates for Northstar Travel Media and completed a Masters of Philosophy in Public Culture at the University of Cape Town. Kim is currently back on the tourist trail researching the impacts of backpacker culture on Sydney, Australia.
South African writer and television producer Denise Slabbert has been writing about fabulous and fascinating places for the past 15 years. She travelled the world as editor of Sawubona and then moved on to making documentaries for television.
She continues to write about fascinating (and offbeat) places and is a regular contributor to Sawubona, the Mail & Guardian, Longevity, Business in Africa, Femina, the RCI Holidays magazine as well as the South African Tourism website. She recently won an international award for a documentary about the Hare Krishna community in Ghana.
Media Reviews:
South African Country Life (Cindy May Wang):
„This is not just an interesting guidebook but fun reading, even if you never get to Calvinia to see the world’s biggest postbox for yourself.“

Flying high on ‘Tante Ju':
For an experience you won't soon forget, take to the skies of Gauteng in ‘Tante Ju', one of only six fully restored Junker JU-52s in the world. A 30-minute pleasure flight aboard ‘Tante Ju'- very much the Great Old Aunt of South Africa's skyways - will have you dreaming of an era of stylish elegance, when flying was purely a luxury, not a necessity.
Some of the plane's more famous passengers have included Queen Margaret of Denmark, King Gustaf of Sweden, actor John Travolta and, not to be outdone, the king of pop himself, Michael Jackson. So as the plane soars up over Johannesburg you can relax knowing that you are in the company of greats.
What most people don't know is that the Junker JLJ-52 is closely linked to the early aviation history of South Africa. Not long after South African Airways (SAA) was founded in 1934, the airline purchased three Junker JU-52s.
By the mid-1930s with the success of SAA, an order for 19 of the new, bigger-engined aircraft was placed. Ironically, with the outbreak of WW II in 1939, SAA was never to receive this order - the aircraft were eventually al commandeered by the South African Airforce!
It wasn't until 1983 that SAA again purchased a Junker JU-52, this time from a private collector in England. Over a period of seven months she was skilfully restored, painted in her livery of the 1930s and finally returned to the skies on 16 January 1984. Although officially renamed the Jan van Riebeeck, this giant of the sky has retained her fond nickname, 'Tante Ju'.
Operated by South African Historic Flight, a specialist vintage charter organisation, 'Tante Ju' is available for charter and pleasure flights. The old plane carries 16 passengers on pleasure flights and 12 on charter flights - so go on and invite your friends.
Getting There:
'Tante Ju'can be found in Hangar 7 West in the SAA Technical Area of Johannesburg International Airport.

Ghostly tours:
If you want to make contact with the afterlife, Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape is a great place to start. According to Rose Trehaven, who spends her nights leading haunted walks through the city's streets, ghosts abound in old buildings and places redolent of the city's early settlement.
Nicknamed the 'Friendly City; Port Elizabeth was founded in 1820 by Sir Rufane Donkin, the acting governor of the then Cape Colony - he named it after his late wife, Elizabeth. More infamously, however, the city is renowned as the site of a concentration camp built by the British during the Anglo-Boer Warto house Boer women and children.
Today, it is the ghostly residents that provide the city with its infamy. As Rose says, 'There are many tales to tell of visitors and apparitions, mysterious happenings and strange hauntings that have been experienced by people for many years in Port Elizabeth - some of which still appear today.'
Inspired by a holiday to the United Kingdom, Rose, a curator at the No 7 Castle Hill Museum, began leading the walks in 1994. 'I had just returned from a visit to the UK where I had gone on a walk of this type in York. It was a wonderful and fascinating experience,'she recalls.
Rose's walks follow various routes through the historical heart of the city, taking in sites around Market Square and up on Central Hill. On the two-hour tour you'll hear tales of many resident ghosts as you thread your way through the streets.
A ghostly favourite is' Alfie; an Anglo-Boer War soldier, who seemingly bears a great affection for Drill Hill, home of the local regiment, Prince Alfred's Guard.
Another phantom regular is the celebrated commander Captain Francis Evatt who is buried outside the walls of Fort Frederick. Dubbed 'The Father of Port Elizabeth; the Captain is said to have returned periodically to the Fort to keep an eye on local events.
Port Elizabeth was originally known as Fort Frederick, which is the name of the oldest stone building In the Eastern Cape and the earliest permanent structure still in existence.
Getting There:
Rose and her ghostly friends can be found in Port Elizabeth, 260km from Knysna and around 800km from Cape Town. Tours by appointment only.

Big Wave Insanity:
For those who have adrenalin glands where they should have grey matter, the Red Bull Big Wave Challenge is a highlight on the annual calendar. During June the Atlantic coast of the Cape becomes the playground for surfers whose focus is on 'Dungeons; one of the most difficult surfing spots of the world's five premier big wave destinations.
The Big Wave Africa event brings together a select group of South Africans and the world's best big wave chargers to challenge Dungeons; the biggest and most radical surf break on the African continent.
Dungeons is an open water reef located below the Sentinel Mountain at the mouth of Hout Bay. The combination of open ocean swells plus a deep water channel outside the break, followed by the shallow reef, produces super powerful waves. s if this is not intimidating enough, Dungeons features strong currents, cold water, kelp, seals and abundant other marine life.
With big wave surfing, wave selection is paramount, and Dungeons has a line-up that is difficult to work out. The wave stands up unbelievably quickly when it hits the ledge and breaks hard and heavy.
Dungeons was given its name by a local surfer who was trapped underwater for two consecutive 7,6m (25-foot) waves. Dungeons begins to break when the surf hits 3m (10 feet), but doesn't come into form until 5,5m (18 feet), and can hold waves up to 12m (40 feet) or bigger. Dungeons was first conquered in 1984 by Cape Town surfers Pierre de Villiers and Peter Button.
Getting There:
Hout Bay is about 20km from Cape Town. You can take either the coastal route through Hout Bay or the green and motorway route via Kirstenbosch.
