About the author:

Author Sean Fraser, a graduate of Journalism and Media Studies from Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa, is a full-time editor and writer.

For three years he was the Managing Editor of the Globetrotter Travel Series, a collection of acclaimed guides, atlases and travel maps focusing on a wide range of international travel destinations, including those of Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Americas.

He was also Associate Editor of Discover Africa magazine and Contributing Editor on Africa – Environment and Wildlife (now Africa Geographic).

He is also the author of no fewer than eight glossy coffee-table volumes on the people, wildlife and natural splendour of South Africa, three natural history guides aimed at creating conservation awareness among young readers, particularly in Africa, as well as National Geographic’s 336-page African Adventure Atlas, which explores the seemingly endless opportunities for travel and adventure on the continent. Seven Days in Cape Town offers an introduction to these special places, and to many other lesser-known sites and attractions. In addition, the six special excursions take you to the outlying areas, without which a visit to the city is incomplete: the Rowers of the West Coast, the Cape Winelands or the Whale Route. Some are best seen over a day or two and visitors may want to stay overnight - especially if the drive to your destination takes up much of your day. A number of routes are suggested, with the street addresses and telephone numbers of the various sites listed for the traveller's convenience.

These scenic routes are best travelled by car - ideal for a leisurely drive and the opportunity to stop and admire the sunset or investigate the unique flora and fauna of the wondrous Cape Floral Kingdom - but areas serviced by regular bus routes have been indicated, and the Metrorail train service runs down the length of the Cape Peninsula. Naturally, special tours and packages may also be provided by the tourist organisations or travel agents operating within the city.

Most of the suggested tours in this book may be completed in one day, but if you're really in a hurry - and prepared to miss out on some of the many tempting attractions - it is possible to tour the entire peninsula in just a few hours.

The Southern Suburbs lie in the shadow of the mountain ranges which form the spine of the peninsula. Situated in what is known as the Green Belt - the average rainfall at the foot of the mountains tends to be higher than in the rest of the Cape - the lush suburbs provide not only a peek at Capetonians at home, but also a revealing look into the history of the city itself, particularly during the days of English and Dutch occupation. As a result, this string of residential areas reflects a broad and eclectic combination of influences, mixing magnificent Cape Dutch architecture with the Georgian and Victorian styles brought from England.

Access routes to the suburbs at the foot of Table Mountain are plentiful and varied. From the city, take either Eastern Boulevard or De Waal Drive - the latter changes its name regularly along the route, but follow the signs for the Southern Suburbs. As its name implies, Main Road is an important (if sometimes crowded and slow) route, which snakes through most of the Southern Suburbs. From the False Bay area, take the Blue Route (the M3 highway).

On his death in 1906, Cecil John Rhodes, premier of the Cape Colony, left the Rhodes Estate on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain to the nation. The land originally extended to the site of today's Groote Schuur Hospital, and includes such named landmarks as Mostert's Mill, Rhodes Memorial and the Groote Schuur manor house, the Slopes of Table Mountain travelling from the city to the suburbs on De Waal Drive past devil's Peak, an expanse of open land stretches up the slopes. This is a closed nature reserve, and on sunny days small herds of grazing mountain zebra and wildebeest dot the landscape, unperturbed by the city traffic on the highway below.

Perhaps the most famous structure on this portion of the mountain is the grand monument built in commemoration of Cecil John Rhodes. Rhodes was only 18 when he and his brother staked their first claims on the diamond fields of Kimberley, but by the time he died he had created the world's most successful mining house, amassed an immense fortune, and even given his name to a country (Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe), acquiring along the way a reputation as a ruthless businessman, imperialist and politician.

The temple-like Rhodes Memorial was executed by Sir Herbert Baker in grand neo-Classical style, and was constructed in 1912 from Table Mountain granite. The centrepiece of the upper, colonnaded section is J.W. Swan's bust of Rhodes, inscribed with the words penned by Rudyard Kipling in honour of the statesman. At the foot of the monument's stone steps, which are guarded by eight massive bronze lions, stands an impressive equestrian statue, titled 'Physical Energy', and sculpted by G.F. Watts. The view from the steps is quite breathtaking, taking in the city and immediate suburbs below, the Cape Flats, Tygerberg Hills and the distant Hottentots-Holland Mountains.

Tucked away behind the memorial and surrounded by the mountain's unique flora, stands a charming old stone cottage which serves as a restaurant and tearoom. The tiny lodge is particularly popular for afternoon tea and as a venue for intimate receptions. Just a little further up the slopes of the mountain, a small Prayer Garden is open to the public.

Below Rhodes Memorial, visitors will notice the characteristic sails of a traditional Dutch windmill at the turn-off from Rhodes Drive into Woolsack Drive, which leads down the hill into the suburb of Rosebank. This is Mosterts Mill, a rare example of an authentic Dutch windmill. The mill was built in 1796 by Wouter Mostert, one of the small number of free burghers who were permitted by Commander Jan van Riebeeck to establish farms beyond the immediate confines of the settlement on Table Bay. The mill was later purchased by the Van Reenen family of the farm Welgelegen. With financial aid from the Netherlands, the structure was painstakingly restored in 1936 and today Mosterts Mill is open to the public.

Observatory to Rosebank: The South African Astronomical Observatory, located off Observatory Road, has given its name to the bohemian suburb of Observatory. Built in 1820, the facility hosts plenty of activities related to the observation of the skies, and offers guided tours of the observatory itself. At eight o'clock every second Saturday, the observatory invites visitors to watch the stars over the city through its telescope.

The Irma Stern Museum on Cecil Road in Rosebank is a satellite of the University of Cape Town's fine art department, and provides considerable insight into the work and life of one of South Africa's most gifted painters. More than 200 of her paintings are exhibited in the house, which was her home for nearly 40 years. Born in Germany, Irma Stern was at times a controversial figure, but her passionate brushstrokes and exciting use of colour have ensured that her work remains highly regarded and much sought after. The museum also houses her collections of African, European and Eastern art and furniture, which she accumulated during her extensive travels. Her studio - which has been left undisturbed since her death in 1966 - is also the venue for temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. [...]
