Description:

Michael Power was born in 1933 in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, and educated at St Aidan's in Grahamstown, the University of Natal and Oxford University, where he took an honours degree in jurisprudence. From 1962 he worked in the public relations department of a large South African corporation, based in Johannesburg. There in 1964 he was associated with the founding of Blue Crane Books in order to publish the works of Credo Mutwa. His own writing career began in 1962 with the publication by Cassell of his first novel, Holiday, which was followed by A Gathering of Golden Angels a year later. He also then contributed short stories to several outlets, such as The Cornhill Magazine and New South African Writing, and worked on The South African Tatler. His third novel, Shadow Game, appeared from Michael Joseph in London pseudonymously (as by 'Laurence Eben') in 1972, followed by a Panther paperback two years later. Both printings were embargoed and banned in South Africa. This edition is the first to be available to readers, and under his own name, in his own country.
