Description:

Savuti: The Vanishing River is a personal account of this unique and enigmatic area in northern Botswana's Chobe National Park. Situated across the migratory paths of countless animals the 100 kilometres of clear water in the Savuti Channel could be depended upon regardless of the local rainfall. Enormous herds of buffalo, zebra and elephant came to its banks year after year. But in 1982, for no apparent reason, the water began to recede. Clive Walker recounts how he and others watched helplessly as the animals still came expecting an oasis but were confronted with mud and dust. Savuti chronicles the most recent drying of the channel, a process that has been repeated at least four times in the past 150 years. No one can tell why it happens or when the channel will flow again. Life in Savuti adapts to the cycles of abundance and scarcity and the area's beauty changes with the cycles. Through his evocative words, drawings and photographs Clive Walker conveys the importance of conserving wilderness areas such as Savuti. He depicts the contrasts which make Savuti unique: the beauty and the harshness, luxuriant riverine vegetation and parched Kalahari grasses, conservationists and poachers: life and death.
