Description:

Anton van Wouw (1862–1945) is the most prominent sculptor of his generation and is regarded as the father of South African sculpture. This Dutch-born artist moved to South Africa at the age of 28 and developed a great appreciation of the people and country. His monumental works include the Kruger Monument on Church Square in Pretoria, the National Women’s Memorial in Bloemfontein and the Voortrekker woman and children at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria.

Through his smaller works, however, Anton van Wouw reached heights of sculptural expression that he seldom attained in his monumental works. These smaller works give a historical perspective on the socio-economic and cultural circumstances of South Africa. With his sculptures he has provided us with a visual record of the people of President Kruger’s Pretoria and the magnates and workers of the mining world of early twentieth-century Johannesburg. Van Wouw’s smaller works are reinterpreted and re-evaluated by the eminent professor Alexander E. Duffey. Through many years of research Duffey provides an authoritative text of the life and work of this intriguing figure.
