Against the Grain. Memories of a Zimbabwean newsman

Author: Geoff Nyarota
Publisher: Zebra Press
Cape Town, 2006
ISBN 9781770071124
Paperback, 15x23 cm, 432 pages, several colour and bw photos

Description:

As an independent newspaper editor, courageously exposing the truth, Geoffrey Nyarota was on a collision course with the Zimbabwean government and would become Robert Mugabe’s public enemy number one.

The newspapers he edited during his career - the Chronicle, the Financial Gazette and the Daily News - were often the lone voice of dissent against a government that had betrayed its people.

They chronicled the decline of the country under the Mugabe regime, and how the freedom achieved in the war of liberation was replaced by wholesale government corruption and oppression.

As government stepped up the campaign against a free press, Nyarota was subjected to extreme harassment, facing intimidation, arrest, the bombing of his printing press - and a contract on his life.

Against the Grain records Nyarota’s early life as a schoolteacher caught in the crossfire of a guerrilla war, his cadetship at a newspaper subsequently acquired by the Mugabe government, the official corruption and graft he exposed during his career, and how he eventually had to flee his homeland in 2003 to go into exile. Gripping and-insightful, Against the Grain is his story.

About the author:

Geoff Nyarota was the founding editor of the Daily News. He is a Fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, both at Harvard University, and is the recipient of nine international journalism awards.

These include the Golden Pen of Freedom, presented by the World Association of Newspapers, and UNESCO’s Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Award. He currently lives in the United States.

Media Reviews:

Mail & Guardian (Percy Zvomuya):
„I can’t think of many people who could, from personal experience and working as journalists at Zimbabwe’s critical moments, write a capsule history of the country in the way Nyarota has.“

Witness (Anthony Stidolph):
„If the morality of a system can be judged in part by the way it treats its opponents, this illuminating memoir should serve as a chastening reminder of just how low Zimbabwe has sunk.“

Foreword:

ONE OF THE best friends I ever had, now deceased, once said to me, ‘John, why don’t you coordinate the writing of a true history of Zimbabwe? Do you want the task to be undertaken by politicians who will mangle and distort the facts to suit their political agendas?’

The question was asked in all seriousness, because my friend knew that I had lived through the modern political history of Zimbabwe, initially as a journalist and subsequently as a practising lawyer, from the days of Benjamin Burombo’s British African Voice Association in the late 1940s to the liberation of the country by guerrillas of the Patriotic Front.

I wish my late friend was still around, because in this work, Geoff, as he is popularly called, has, in his inimitable style, provided a timely, well-researched, incisive and perceptive account of the latter years of the struggle as he perceived them.

With the exception of South Africa, the struggle for the liberation of Zimbabwe was arguably one of the most protracted regional campaigns in southern Africa. What began as a passive, non-violent movement, progressed through militancy and culminated in a formidable armed struggle until victory was achieved in 1980.
Geoff’s account of the events from the official start of the war of liberation at Chinhoyi in 1966 is a fascinating yet factual story that constitutes a reliable record to which anyone else wishing to write on the subject would be well advised to refer constantly.

Some readers will recall that after Burombo’s movement came the militant African National Congress Youth League of James Chikerema and George Nyandoro, Zimbabwe’s inseparable lifelong nationalists, political activists, freedom fighters and guerrillas in the true sense. This organisation was followed by the mass movement known as the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (Zapu) and its successor, the National Democratic Party (NDP), led by, among others, Joshua Nkomo, Ndabaningi Sithole and Robert Mugabe. After lan Smith banned the NDP, the party split into the People’s Caretaker Council (PCC) and the Zimbabwe African National Union (Zanu).

On the eve of the first one-man one-vote general election in 1980, the Patriotic Front (PF) divided into Zanu-PF, led by Mugabe, and PF-Zapu, led by Nkomo. Zanu-PF won the election and has remained in power until the present day. In December 1987, Zanu-PF and PF-Zapu merged into a single political party and, ironically, adopted the name Zanu-PF. But the merger brought about no change of political dispensation and it was not until 1999 that Zimbabwe had any meaningful opposition to Zanu-PF, in the form of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

I knew that Geoff had won numerous regional and international awards for excellence in journalism. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that although we had worked fairly closely together for a long period before I relocated to another country, Geoff had success- fully concealed some of the awards from me. The blame is entirely mine for not keeping up with media issues as diligently as in the past.

I have always been familiar with Geoff’s wry sense of humour, but I think that in this book, he has excelled himself. He doggedly traces the fortunes of one of lan Smith’s semi-literate black policemen, who had arrested and tortured him while he was still a schoolteacher in eastern Zimbabwe in the late 1970s, to that character’s current position as a director of the national airline, Air Zimbabwe. Typically, Geoff muses ironically that the former policeman’s appointment to the board might help to explain why Air Zimbabwe finds it difficult to operate efficiently, if at all.

Geoff has been a powerful influence in the field of journalism throughout southern Africa in general and in Zimbabwe in particular. His outstanding quality as a newspaper editor was that he never sent any of his reporters on an assignment that he was not prepared to carry out himself, and he often did so at great risk to his personal safety, that of his wife Ursula and their children, who have all stood by him through thick and thin. His investigation and courageous exposure of the Willowgate car scandal, the Harare International Airport construction tender scam and other high-profile corruption in Zimbabwe bear eloquent testimony to his ability in, and commitment and dedication to the profession of journalism.

Among Geoff’s contemporaries and those who followed him are courageous newsmen such as Trevor Vusumuzi Ncube, publisher of a widely read regional weekly newspaper, and the late Mark Chavunduka, a former Nieman Fellow like Geoff. Ironically, the list of Geoff’s former columnists includes none other than Jonathan Nathaniel Moyo, a university lecturer who worked his way up to become Mugabe’s spin doctor, until he fell out of favour for allegedly conspiring to defeat Mugabe’s choice of vice-president.

A number of texts on Zimbabwe have been published, especially in the last fifteen years or so. But I am convinced that this one stands out as probably the best of the collection. Geoff has truly deserved all the awards he has received for journalism and I believe that more are yet to follow. In the meanwhile, I believe that this book is deserving of a literary award in its own right.

THE HONOURABLE MR JUSTICE JOHN OLIVER MANYARARA WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA MARCH 2006
