Description:

There's magic and adventure trails in Kirstenbosch, you just have to know where to find it. Kirstenbosch is a treasure trove of indigenous plants, plants that grow naturally in southern Africa. Here you'll also find gems of prehistory, enchanted forests, secret gardens, gurgling mountain streams, tumbling waterfalls, mirror pools, even a giant forest spider. The routes in this book will take you to spots you may not have found on your own, and we hope you'll feel inspired to explore further and discover even more. Kirstenbosch lies on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. If you look straight up at the rocky cliffs above the garden you'll be staring directly at Castle Rock, which some people think looks rather like Mickey Mouse. Mountain streams have cut deep gorges on either side of this rock and flow down through the garden.

To the left is Nursery Stream, while to the right is Skeleton Stream. Window Stream flows almost invisibly behind a tangle of wild bauhinia, alongside the old entrance road. You'll encounter each of these streams on your trails through the garden. Daphne Mackie, author of Adventure Trails In Kirstenbosch, was born in Rhodesia and has lived all over southern Africa. She has painted the flowers of Africa for as long as she can remember. This passion grew from a deep empathy with the earth and her childhood spent in the wild. After marrying a Capetonian in 1964, Daphne discovered the sanctuary that is Kirstenbosch, and her love of nature led to a fulfilling career in art, reproducing the indigenous Cape flora. Daphne lives in Cape Town with her husband Keith and springer spaniel.
